Finding inspiration for your writing

By Beth Graddon-Hodgson

shutterstock_58271320It doesn’t matter what you’re writing about, whether you’re blogging for your business or writing a novel; it’s still a creative process. To produce your best work, you’ve got to find your groove and then simply let the words flow.

My day consists of a lot of different types of writing. A fairly large percentage of it is business blogging, but for each and every blog it’s for a different industry, in a different style and tone. Then there are the articles, web copy and other pieces that I’ve got to dive right into. Wondering what my point is? Well, changing hats so many times throughout the day is not easy, and I need to wipe the slate clean, get new perspective and return to write with new inspiration.

Inspiration for writing can come from anywhere. What works for me, won’t necessarily work for you, but finding what recharges you is essential if you want to be successful as a professional blogger or a business owner writing for your business blog.

The idea of inspiration can be taken far too literally. Just because you’re writing an article about gardening, doesn’t mean that you need to get out there and start weeding. That might come later, but the inspiration to write must come from within you, not what’s around you.

I take a break between every item I write to find it within me. I am most inspired when I step away from thinking like a writer and just exist, even if only for a few minutes. I recharge by closing my eyes and listening to a favorite song, repeating a positive affirmation, or doing some deep breathing while stretching in a freeing yoga pose that’s good for the mind and body. Inspiration can also come from other activities that you wouldn’t expect; a chat with a friend or family member, a moment to pet or play with pets, or a few minutes of social networking.

Inspiration can come from freeing yourself of whatever was on your mind, so you return to write with new perspective, ready to focus on whatever project is ahead of you.

What inspires you?

You are right, inspiration is quite needed when we start to write any kind of articles. One can really come up with great articles if one gets truly inspired

  2. Andy @ FirstFound Says:

Finding inspiration’s always difficult for me. But I always try to read as much as I write, that way I’m bound to stumble across someone or something that leads to a sudden flash of inspiration.

As an aspiring novelist I try to write a little (or a lot) every day. I find inspiration from reading books from a variety of different eras and genres. Even reading the news counts in my opinion. I also find a lot of inspiration trying to describe objects or people in my head that I pass by during the day. I need more time in my day for writing.

I’m inspired by just about anything. My blog posts follow along with those inspiring moments, good or bad, happy or sad, frustrated or elated.
My only real goal in my writing is to inspire others toward some sort of emotion.
To be honest, it’s doesn’t hurt that I have 2 amazing daughters and live in one of the most beautiful places on earth, British Columbia.
I think that the most important thing in good writing is to keep it simple and authentic. If you’re truthful people will be drawn to your writing and to you.
Thanks for posting this, it’s fun to think about it.

I agree with you when you say that inspiration in writing should come with in us and not on the things around us, since I have discovered that the famous works of greatest writers in history were products of their best and worst experiences in life. It’s really difficult to write if you don’t have any reason or inspiration to write at all. Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing this insightful post. I really had a good read.

I totally agree with you.Inspiration must come from our-self and should not from the surroundings. This is not for gaining comments alone but also to share what we know and what are the matters we feel to share with all.

I admire you for bringing such a wonderful post!

    Thanks!!

I find one of the places I most get inspiration is in the shower. Maybe just because it is such a change of pace or something. I often come up with good ideas in there, though… ;)

Inspiration keeps writers from making good articles and write ups. Writing might be a daunting task for others but not for an inspired writer. Every writer have their own source of inspiration that motivates them to continue their passion. Great post, thanks for sharing.
