Bonnie! Another thing that drives me CRAZY! Is the new people creating their profiles that actually upload all the emails they have to "invite their friends to join them on ..." Whoa! I have been on a long time - please don't do that!

Smart move - just a clarification for readers - this guy sent the message WITHIN LinkedIn. So without an account, I could never have received it. That's another reason I didn't cut the guy any slack.

When I receive invites like this I simply reply back what beyond sheer number of contacts makes you think it is a benefit for us to be connected? I rarely get anything.

Yes, my first thought might be that this guy is too aggressive. My second thought is not to be so harsh. Maybe he's new at this and doesn't understand how linkedin works. I know when I first signed up I was totally confused how the introductions were to take place and I've made a few "faux pas".
If this is an indication of the way he conducts his business, he won't be around long. If he's a little naive, then maybe you can suggest he learn about social media etiquette.

Don't you think it does a huge amount of damage to the brand? I'd never heard of his company before but looked it up and will not have a good impression even though I've never worked with them!

I am amazed at the number of people who think that a huge quantity can make up for a total lack of of quality. Because eCommunication is so cheap people think it is perfectly acceptable to broadcast an ill-conceived message with the expectation that just a few people responding will make it worthwhile. It is just not true. It's a waste of time and it's bad karma too.

Hi Bonnie,
Sad thing is that he is not the only one, on this or any other similar site.
My favorite is when I receive a message telling me that the person was going through their list of contacts and saw that even though I was one of their contact, I was not a member of their group on a particular site - and I've never even heard of, let alone met this person!!!!
Amazing, that with all the communications tools we now have at our fingertips, so many still don't know how to really communicate!

I vote for contacting him. Before you tell him he’s a social media misfit, ask him what the marketing plan is at the XXX company. Might be interesting to hear the sales penetration plan for this company and how successful the current strategy is.
